It has been 30 years since the original Toy Story movie was released, establishing the animation giant as a major film company and introducing audiences to beloved characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

In 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a glimpse into the storyline but keeping fans curious how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Toys

In the teaser shows the young girl — who received the toy collection when he left for college — receiving a latest plaything, one that alarms the familiar toy group. Bonnie gets her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the toys seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and assisting giveaway items locate loving owners.

Certainly, Pixar will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in Bonnie's room without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have come back with him. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

At the very least, some elements are continuing from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. The clip shows the badge attached to her outfit.

Hopefully she is remains the key figure among the toys.
